Leipzig takes an interdisciplinary approach to African Studies. Our teaching covers the discursive, social, cultural, economic and political dynamics of Africa. We also provide language training in Kiswahili and / or Hausa and organize opportunities to gain practical experience.

We enable our students to think independently and reflexively about Africa, teaching them in various ways how to ask questions and interpret a given body of material. We draw their attention to the limits of knowledge about Africa and criticize the reliance upon everyday stereotypes.

In our courses we provide insights into the ways in which research about Africa is conducted.

Students have the option of spending part of their time studying at another university, either elsewhere in Europe or in Africa, as well as doing internships with the aim of enhancing their career prospects.
