In our BA and MA African Studies you acquire tools to critically engage with 'Africa' and its role in the world and in the sciences. The focus areas of your studies will be language, society, politics, economics and history.

"Africa" – what’s that supposed to mean?

At the Institute of African Studies we approach ‘Africa’ from various perspectives. Our broad curriculum offers a unique combination of language, society, politics and history. The BA programme provides you with an insight into numerous scientific fields within African Studies. You will engage independently with questions and problems relating to Africa, learning to analyse and interpret contents in a variety of scientific methods. Throughout this learning process you will also begin to pose your own critical questions. As part of our language training, you will study Swahili and/or Hausa while critically and innovatively thinking about language.
