With the end of the summer semester 2009, Prof. Dr. phil. habil. H. Ekkehard Wolff retired from the Chair of African Linguistics (Afrikanistik - African Languages and Literatures) at the University of Leipzig.

Professor Wolff was Professor of Afrikanistik at the University of Hamburg when he took over the Leipzig Chair in August 1994. He served the Institut für Afrikanistik as its Director/Head for a total of 6 years. For another 3 years, he served the Fakultät für Geschichte, Kunst- und Orientwissenschaften as Deputy Dean (Prodekan) and was member of a number of committees on Rectorate level.

Professor Wolff continued the Leipzig tradition of opening African linguistics to questions of sociocultural modernization and economic development in postcolonial Africa. He established Leipzig, not the least in cooperation with fellow linguists at the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, as a hub of African linguistics and applied African sociolinguistics of worldwide recognition.

Professor Wolff has returned, after 15 successful years in Leipzig, to Northern Germany and now lives in the rural parts of Schleswig-Holstein on the shores of the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei.
